The project
Smarter Together asked how 21st-century technology fits into neighbourhoods that have grown for centuries — and how to renew them without leaving residents behind. Coordinated by SPL Lyon Confluence, the Lighthouse cities Lyon, Munich and Vienna demonstrated integrated solutions across citizen engagement, district heating and renewable energy, holistic refurbishment, smart data and e-mobility, while Santiago de Compostela, Sofia and Venice prepared replication, with Kyiv and Yokohama observing.
The challenge
The project combined building renovation, district energy, renewables, urban data, e-mobility and citizen co-creation in living neighbourhoods. The communication challenge was to make those interconnected demonstrations understandable without reducing them to isolated technologies — and to move the learning from Lighthouse cities to follower cities and the wider European smart-city community.
